A Private Journey Through Ladakh’s Monasteries, Valleys and High-Altitude Lakes
Discover Ladakh through a carefully paced private journey combining ancient Buddhist monasteries, the Indus Valley, Nubra’s mountain landscapes, Pangong Lake and the remote Changthang plateau.
The itinerary begins with two nights in Leh, allowing essential time to rest and adjust gradually to the altitude. Continue through Alchi, Lamayuru, Rizong and Uleytokpo before returning to Leh for the monasteries of Thiksey, Shey and Hemis. A hosted lunch with a Ladakhi family provides a more personal introduction to the region’s food, traditions and everyday life.
Travel onward to Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Hanle and Tso Moriri through some of the Himalayas’ most dramatic landscapes. In Hanle, experience one of India’s most remarkable dark-sky environments and, when permissions and conditions allow, make an excursion toward the Umling La road at approximately 5,798 metres.
This is not presented as a conventional luxury holiday. Comfortable hotels and resorts are used in Delhi, Leh and other established destinations, while accommodation in Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri is simpler and selected from the best suitable options available. Remote roads can be long and uneven, facilities are limited, and weather may require changes.
All meals are included during the Ladakh portion of the journey. Private transportation, an experienced driver, professional local guidance, required permits and 24/7 assistance create a well-supported journey for travelers ready to experience the authentic character of the high Himalayas.

Umling La reaches approximately 5,798 metres and is promoted as the world’s highest motorable-road experience. Any visit will be brief, carefully managed and dependent on government authorization, nationality-based access rules, road conditions, weather and the travelers’ physical condition.
Guests experiencing symptoms associated with altitude will not continue higher. The guide and local operations team retain the right to cancel the excursion when conditions make it unsuitable.
If Umling La access is unavailable, enjoy an alternative program around Hanle using currently permitted routes. This can include Hanle Monastery, village landscapes, the Changthang environment and dark-sky experiences.

Leh Buffer and Rest Day
This day protects the itinerary against road closures, weather disruption, permit-related changes or delays elsewhere in Ladakh.

Keeping this day uncommitted substantially reduces the risk of a road delay affecting the flight to Delhi.

Important Information
Please review these essential details before confirming your private Ladakh journey.
- Travelers should consult a medical professional before booking, particularly when heart, lung, blood-pressure or mobility conditions are present.
- The first two days in Leh are intentionally gentle and must not be removed from the program.
- Guests experiencing altitude-related symptoms will not continue higher until considered fit to proceed.
- The guide and operations team may alter or cancel an excursion when health, weather or road conditions make it unsuitable.
- Umling La is conditional and cannot be guaranteed for every nationality, travel date or permit category.
- If Umling La is unavailable, an alternative permitted Hanle and Changthang experience will be arranged.
- Passport copies and additional personal details may be required well before arrival to process protected-area permits.
- The final route must follow the permits and instructions issued by the local, civil and security authorities.
- Accommodation in Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri is simpler than in Delhi or Leh and represents the best suitable option available.
- Heating, hot water, electricity, Wi-Fi and mobile coverage may be limited or available only during specified hours.
- All meals are included in Ladakh, but remote properties may provide simple fixed menus with fewer choices.
- Dietary requirements and allergies must be communicated before confirmation. Some specialized ingredients may not be available in remote areas.
- Road journeys can be long, dusty, uneven and affected by construction, water crossings, landslides or military controls.
- Driving times are approximate and should never be treated as guaranteed arrival times.
- The recommended operating period is generally June to September, although weather and road access remain unpredictable.
- The Leh buffer day protects the journey against delays and should not be replaced with a tightly scheduled excursion.
- Domestic flights may be delayed or cancelled because of Himalayan weather or operational restrictions.
- Medical facilities outside Leh are extremely limited and evacuation from remote Ladakh can be difficult and expensive.
- Comprehensive insurance must cover high-altitude travel, medical treatment, emergency evacuation, cancellation and disruption.
- Satellite phones and unauthorized satellite-communication or tracking devices must not be carried into India.
- Drones may not be used without the required Indian permissions, particularly near airports, monasteries and sensitive border areas.
- Photography may be restricted at monasteries, military areas, bridges and checkpoints. Always follow the guide’s instructions.
- Carry sufficient personal medication, sun protection, warm layers and essential items because shopping opportunities are limited outside Leh.
- Travelers should be comfortable with basic facilities, changing conditions and genuine remote-region travel.
Final permits, road access and the Umling La decision will be reconfirmed for each traveler’s nationality and departure date. Safety and legal access always take priority over the published route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful information for planning your private high-altitude journey through Ladakh.
Is this a private and customizable tour?
Yes. Transportation and sightseeing are arranged privately. The hotel category, departure date, pace and selected experiences can be adapted, although acclimatization days and essential safety provisions should not be removed.
Is this a luxury tour?
No. This is a comfort-focused journey through a remote Himalayan region. We use the best suitable accommodation available, but Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri do not consistently offer conventional luxury hotels, restaurants or services.
How physically demanding is the journey?
The tour does not involve technical trekking, but the altitude, long road journeys, cold conditions and limited facilities make it moderately demanding. Travelers should be mobile, medically suitable for high-altitude travel and comfortable with uneven roads.
How do you manage acclimatization?
The itinerary begins with two gentle nights in Leh before proceeding gradually through Ladakh. Activities remain flexible, and no guest should continue to a higher elevation while experiencing worsening altitude-related symptoms.
Is the Umling La excursion guaranteed?
No. Access depends on government authorization, the travelers’ nationalities, road and weather conditions, security regulations and medical suitability. When Umling La is unavailable, a permitted Hanle and Changthang experience will be provided instead.
Which meals are included?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included throughout Ladakh, including one hosted lunch with a Ladakhi family. Delhi includes breakfast; other Delhi meals are excluded unless specified in your proposal. Remote-area menus may be simple and offer fewer choices.
What is the best time for this tour?
June to September generally provides the best opportunity for the complete route. Late-May and early-October journeys may be possible, but cold weather, snow and road closures become more likely.
What happens if weather or permits affect the route?
The itinerary will be adjusted around the roads and areas legally available at the time. The Leh buffer day provides flexibility, but additional services resulting from extended disruption may involve extra costs covered by the traveler or travel insurance.
