Overview

Discover a quieter and remarkably different side of India on this private journey through Kolkata, Darjeeling and the Eastern Himalayas of Sikkim. Tea-covered hills, Buddhist monasteries, forested valleys and views of Mount Khangchendzonga create a journey rich in nature, culture and living Himalayan traditions.

Begin with two nights in Kolkata before flying to Bagdogra and continuing into the hills. In Darjeeling, ride the historic Himalayan railway, visit a working tea estate and explore a hill town shaped by Indian, Nepali, Tibetan and British influences. Continue into Sikkim for the monasteries and mountain scenery of Pelling and Gangtok before travelling to remote Lachung and the high-altitude landscapes of Yumthang Valley.

The itinerary has been designed for international travelers who value meaningful experiences without changing hotels every night. Mountain journeys are intentionally balanced with multiple-night stays, private sightseeing and time to enjoy the surroundings.

Travel in Sikkim requires flexibility. Government permits, mountain weather, landslides, snowfall and local road conditions can affect access to Tsomgo Lake, Lachung and Yumthang Valley. Comfortable and premium hotels are available in the principal towns, while accommodation and services in remote North Sikkim are simpler. MoreIndia Travels will arrange the best suitable services available and provide local assistance throughout the journey.

Darjeeling

After breakfast, transfer to Kolkata Airport for the flight to Bagdogra.

Upon arrival, meet your mountain driver and begin the scenic drive to Darjeeling. The route gradually climbs from the plains into the Eastern Himalayan foothills, passing forested slopes, settlements and tea-growing country.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Mountain Heritage

Darjeeling
+

After breakfast, experience a journey on the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The narrow-gauge railway is one of the region’s best-known heritage experiences and offers a memorable introduction to Darjeeling’s mountain landscape.

The usual excursion includes Ghoom, one of India’s highest railway stations, and the Batasia Loop, where the railway curves around landscaped gardens with views toward the surrounding mountains when the weather is clear.

Visit Ghoom Monastery and learn about the Buddhist traditions of the region. Later, continue to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the adjoining Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, known for its conservation work involving Himalayan species.

The precise sequence will depend on confirmed train timings and weekly closing days.

Overnight: Darjeeling

Day 5

Darjeeling Tea Heritage and Leisure

Darjeeling
+

An optional early-morning visit to Tiger Hill can be arranged to watch the sunrise over the Himalayan ranges. Visibility is entirely dependent on weather, and the early departure is not compulsory.

Return to the hotel for breakfast before visiting a working tea estate. Walk through the tea gardens and learn about cultivation, hand-plucking and the different stages of processing Darjeeling tea. A factory visit and tasting will be included when the estate is operating.

Continue to the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, subject to its opening schedule, and discover traditional weaving, carpets and handicrafts.

The late afternoon is free to enjoy Chowrasta and the Mall, visit local shops or relax at the hotel.

Day 6

Darjeeling to Pelling

Pelling
+

After breakfast, leave Darjeeling and travel through the mountain landscapes toward Pelling in West Sikkim.

The journey involves winding roads and normally takes approximately five to six hours, although road and weather conditions may affect the timing. Permit formalities will be completed at the appropriate Sikkim entry point.

Arrive in Pelling and check into your hotel. The remainder of the day is intentionally free, allowing you to rest and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains.

On clear days, Pelling offers impressive views toward the Khangchendzonga range.

Overnight: Pelling
Meals: Breakfast

Day 7

Pelling, Khecheopalri Lake and Yuksom

Pelling
+

Begin with a visit to Pemayangtse Monastery, one of Sikkim’s most important and historic Buddhist monasteries. Continue toward Khecheopalri Lake, a sacred forest lake revered by both Buddhists and Hindus.

Travel onward to Yuksom, the first capital of the former Kingdom of Sikkim and the place where the first Chogyal was consecrated in the seventeenth century. Visit the historic coronation site at Norbugang and learn about the establishment of the Sikkimese kingdom.

Guests with suitable fitness may take an optional forest walk toward Dubdi Monastery. The trail includes inclines and uneven ground, so it will only be proposed when weather, daylight and physical ability permit.

Return to Pelling in the late afternoon, stopping at waterfalls or viewpoints when conditions allow.

Overnight: Pelling
Meals: Breakfast

Day 8

Pelling to Gangtok via Ravangla

Gangtok
+

After breakfast, travel toward Gangtok, stopping at Ravangla to visit Buddha Park.

The park is dominated by an impressive seated Buddha statue surrounded by landscaped gardens, prayer areas and Himalayan scenery. Continue through Sikkim’s forested hills and river valleys toward Gangtok.

Arrive in the state capital and check into your hotel. The evening is free to explore pedestrian-friendly MG Marg or relax after the mountain journey.

Day 9

Gangtok: Monasteries and Tibetan Heritage

Gangtok
+

Explore Gangtok and its surroundings with a local guide.

Visit Rumtek Monastery, an important center of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Continue to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, whose collection includes Buddhist manuscripts, ritual objects, statues and traditional thangka paintings.

See the nearby Do Drul Chorten and its surrounding prayer wheels. Depending on opening days and available time, visit Enchey Monastery, the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom or another cultural institution.

Return to your hotel in the afternoon. The remainder of the day is available for independent exploration of MG Marg.

Overnight: Gangtok
Meals: Breakfast

Day 10

Tsomgo Lake Excursion

Gangtok
+

Subject to government permit approval, weather and road conditions, travel to Tsomgo Lake, a sacred glacial lake situated at approximately 3,750 meters above sea level.

The road climbs rapidly from Gangtok through dramatic mountain terrain. Time will be provided to enjoy the landscape without strenuous activity. Because of the altitude, guests should walk slowly, remain hydrated and inform the guide immediately if they feel unwell.

Foreign nationals are normally permitted as far as Tsomgo Lake with the required documentation. Nathula Pass is not included.

If Tsomgo Lake is inaccessible because of permit restrictions, snow, landslides or road closures, an alternative sightseeing program in and around Gangtok will be arranged.

Return to Gangtok during the afternoon.

Overnight: Gangtok
Meals: Breakfast

Day 11

Gangtok to Lachung

Lachung
+

After an early breakfast, begin the journey into North Sikkim.

Travel through steep river valleys and remote mountain landscapes, stopping when permitted at viewpoints and waterfalls such as Naga Falls, Seven Sisters Waterfall or Bhim Nala. The exact stops depend on road access, traffic control and daylight.

The journey to Lachung can take approximately seven to eight hours and includes winding, uneven mountain roads. A simple lunch will be served en route.

Arrive in Lachung and check into the best suitable available hotel. Accommodation, heating, hot water, electricity, internet and meal choices are more limited here than in Gangtok or Darjeeling.

Overnight: Lachung
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 12

Yumthang Valley

Lachung
+

After breakfast, travel to Yumthang Valley, situated at approximately 3,560 meters.

The valley is surrounded by mountain slopes, alpine vegetation and the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. During spring, rhododendrons and other seasonal flowers bring color to the landscape; in winter, snow may transform the valley but can also restrict access.

Enjoy time in the valley without strenuous walking. A visit farther toward Yumesamdong, commonly called Zero Point, will only be considered when legally permitted for the travelers’ nationality and when road, weather and security conditions allow. It is not guaranteed or included automatically.

Return to Lachung for lunch and enjoy a quiet afternoon in the village. Visit Lachung Monastery if it is accessible and open.

Overnight: Lachung
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 13

Lachung to Gangtok

Gangtok
+

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Gangtok.

Travel back through the North Sikkim valleys, with comfort stops and lunch arranged along the route. Driving time can vary considerably because of checkpoints, road repairs, military movements, landslides or weather.

Arrive in Gangtok during the late afternoon or evening and check into your hotel. No sightseeing is planned after arrival.

Overnight: Gangtok
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 14

Gangtok to Bagdogra or Siliguri

Bagdogra
+

After breakfast, descend from Gangtok toward the plains of West Bengal.

The journey normally takes approximately five hours but can be longer because of mountain traffic, road works or weather. Check into a comfortable hotel near Bagdogra Airport or in Siliguri.

This protected final night avoids connecting an unpredictable mountain drive directly with a flight or train departure.

The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Overnight: Bagdogra/Siliguri
Meals: Breakfast

Day 15

Departure from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station

Bagdogra
+

After breakfast, transfer privately to Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station for your onward journey.

If you are connecting to an international departure from Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai, we recommend keeping a protected night in that gateway city rather than booking a tight same-day international connection.

Your private Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalayan journey concludes.

Know before you go

Important Information

This journey travels through sensitive Himalayan regions where permits, weather and road conditions can change. The itinerary is carefully planned, but flexibility is essential and safety instructions from local authorities must always take priority.

Passport and Permit Documents

Foreign guests must provide clear passport, Indian visa and photograph copies within the requested deadline. The original passport used for the permit must be carried during all protected-area journeys.

Permit Approval

Restricted and Protected Area Permits are issued by government authorities and cannot be guaranteed by MoreIndia Travels. Rules vary according to nationality, citizenship, place of birth and current security regulations.

Minimum Two Foreign Travelers

Foreign visitors normally need to travel in a group of at least two for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim. Solo travelers must contact us before booking so that eligibility or an alternative itinerary can be checked.

Altitude

Tsomgo Lake and Yumthang Valley are situated above 3,500 meters. Walk slowly, remain hydrated and inform the guide immediately about headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness.

Mountain Roads

Roads are winding and can be narrow, uneven or affected by repairs. Guests susceptible to motion sickness should carry medication recommended by their doctor. Driving times are always approximate.

Weather and Route Changes

Snowfall, heavy rain, landslides, military movements or government instructions may close a route without notice. Alternative sightseeing will be arranged when practical, but access to a particular mountain location cannot be guaranteed.

Lachung Accommodation

Lachung is remote. Hotels are simpler than those in Kolkata, Darjeeling or Gangtok, and interruptions to electricity, internet, heating or hot water can occur. We use the best suitable available property.

Meals in North Sikkim

Meals in Lachung are generally simple set menus using locally available ingredients. Vegetarian food is widely available. Dietary requirements should be communicated before confirmation.

Local Vehicles

Sikkim transport rules may require locally registered vehicles and driver changes. Larger groups may travel in more than one vehicle. A particular vehicle model cannot be guaranteed on protected routes.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The heritage train is subject to seat availability, timetable changes, mechanical operation and weather. If it does not operate, an alternative Darjeeling experience will be arranged where possible.

Best Travel Period

March to May and October to early December are generally the most suitable periods. Monsoon travel can involve heavy rain and landslides, while winter snow may restrict high-altitude access.

Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical care, trip interruption, delays and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended for this Himalayan itinerary.

Important: Please do not book non-refundable connecting flights until the operating itinerary and permit requirements have been checked. Access to Tsomgo Lake, Lachung and Yumthang Valley remains subject to government permission and current conditions.
What you need to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Essential information for planning a private journey through Darjeeling and Sikkim.

Do foreign travelers need a permit to visit Sikkim?

Yes. Most foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim. Additional Protected Area Permits are required for Tsomgo Lake, Lachung and Yumthang Valley. We assist eligible travelers with the application process.

Can a solo foreign traveler visit North Sikkim?

Foreign travelers normally need to be in a group of at least two for protected areas such as Tsomgo and North Sikkim. Solo travelers should contact us before booking so that the current rule and possible alternatives can be checked.

Are Lachung and Yumthang Valley guaranteed?

No. Access depends on government permits, nationality, weather, snowfall, landslides and road conditions. If the route is closed, we will arrange the best practical alternative, but the inaccessible visit may not always be replaceable with an equivalent experience.

Is this a luxury tour?

Premium and heritage hotels can be arranged in Kolkata, Darjeeling, Pelling and Gangtok. Lachung is remote and does not offer the same luxury standards, so we use the best suitable accommodation available and explain its facilities before confirmation.

Will I experience high altitude?

Yes. Tsomgo Lake and Yumthang Valley are above 3,500 meters. The visits are relatively short, but guests should walk slowly and immediately report symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.

Is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway guaranteed?

The train is included subject to seat availability and operation. Timetables, weather or mechanical requirements can cause changes or cancellations. We will arrange an alternative experience when practical.

Is this itinerary suitable for older travelers?

It can be suitable for active older travelers comfortable with winding roads, long mountain drives, steps and moderate altitude. Guests with heart, respiratory, mobility or serious medical conditions should consult their doctor before booking.

What is the best time for this journey?

March to May offers spring landscapes and seasonal flowers, while October and November often provide clear mountain views. Winter travel is possible but snow may close high-altitude roads. The monsoon requires greater flexibility.

Can the journey be personalized?

Yes. We can change the hotel category, add tea-estate stays, adjust the pace or combine the journey with Bhutan, Nepal, the Golden Triangle or another region of India. Protected-area access will always remain subject to official permission.
